At least, the only markings I can see on it are W68 (followed by another number, 1, 2, or 5 depending on which exact part). I think it may be the xy table off an old lathe. Anybody have any ideas?

That is an excellent score! I looked for a long time and finally got the same atlas x-y table. The top part of the table can be used directly on the atlas 10-12" cross slide for milling parts.

I got mine and use it solely on the drill press. I love being able to dial in the part to be drilled very accurately.

Here's my vise, a hand-me-down from my dad the retired machinist, Starrret/Athol 923. Perfect size for what I do in my cramped basement. 3 inch jaws. I take it from reading the thread the Starrets/Athols are pretty good vises?

Ok, I am excited to share my CL find today. It is a 3-1/2" Wilton vise. I believe it is a 350S by the research so far. I paid $75.00 for it. I am going to strip it down and refinish it. I would love to find out about how old it is. It is new enough that the vise jaws used socket cap screws and the spindle retainer used phillips, not slotted screws. it came on a swivel base. Other numbers on the casting are 101160 on the main unit 101161? on the moving jaw casting. Also the jaws are missing the center pins. I have cleaned up the handle a bit already.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You have removed the screw. Now pull the movable jaw from the body casting. Turn it upside down and look for the manufacturing date to be stamped on the key.

Yup. 1st place I checked. Nothing there, but I did find this on the inside of the end piece.

Also this is what I got done this morning. I am now ready for paint. I use a brass wire cup on my angle grinder.

    If you haven't already,
The dust cap prys off the back of the tail piece... the tail piece is also removed by driving out the pin.

Garage journal has some pretty good threads about Wilton vices and ID #'s

wilton #'s can be either manufacture dates OR warrantee expiration dates...... so I've read...

I am still having trouble posting pictures sorry Above is what I know as a steam fitters vise. By turning the opposing vise jaws it will grip most sizes of pipe from about 3/8 od to 21/4 od pipe without crushing or distorting it. I use it mostly for steel hydraulic pipe to avoid poor fitting and distorted threads. I also value the benefits of the leg vise mounted on the same receiver vise post. The leg vise design allows hammer use without destroying the jaw thread or nut of a movable jaw vise. This vise setup is used most often with our service truck in the nice weather but in the winter makes an extra vise in the shop.Name: 20160228_093324_resized.jpg Views: 1161 Size: 41.1 KB

From what I read and watched on Youtube, it is better to take a long wood or metal dowel and go through from the front where the lead screw goes and pop to out that way. Less chance of damaging the cap.

I like the idea of pre heating it. Hope to paint it this afternoon.

Yes they are great vises and are considered by some to be top shelf among all vises. I agree and found this one on Craigslist a few months ago...even drove 4 hours round trip to pick it up!

I went to a cook out at a friends house and saw this really nice Wilton vise on his bench. I asked him the story behind it and he said it was his grandfathers and has been sitting in his basement for over 35 years. His next words were DO YOU WANT IT.
It is in perfect shape with only a few hack saw scratches on the jaws. No signs of abuse at all. The jaw cross hatching looks like new.
I finally convinced hhim to take $100 for it and he was mad because I forced him to take it.

^^^ nice a Wilton C2 and looks to be in great shape minus the surface rust. Those go for 1k plus new!!

  23. Re: A Bench Vise Thread...

Been told on another forum that this is a Parker 978. Just under 300# Gave a guy $100 for it about 10 years ago, pretty sure he overdosed with that hundred bucks a day or 2 later.

Seeing all these quality vises makes me want to upgrade. I plan on hitting more auctions this spring and hope to get a good quality USA made vise.
